According to a special assistant to the president, Nigeria is set to receive 4 million doses of AstraZeneca COVID vaccine sometime next week from the Covax facility, a global initiative led by the World Health Organisation to purchase and distribute vaccines equally to all countries. The 4 million vaccines constitute a part of the 16 million shots allocated to Nigeria by the facility.

With Nigeria being one of the African nations most affected by the pandemic, with a total of over 154,000 cases and nearly 2,000 deaths, the arrival of these vaccines will help immensely in combating this virus and nudge Nigeria’s economy closer to recovery. Africa’s most populous economy of about 200 million people wants to vaccinate as much as 40% of its population against the coronavirus this year.

Like most countries, Nigeria is prioritising those most vulnerable to the virus. First in line to receive the vaccines are frontline healthcare workers and first responders, before strategic country leadership, the elderly, and those with certain medical conditions or other diseases besides Covid-19.
